How to start your own record label

Starting your own record label isn’t as hard as most people think. First you need to take care of what I think is the most important aspect.

Setting Goals and Strategies

If you really believe in what you have to offer, then take the time to research; and be sure to set reasonable goals. One of the most unreasonable goals with starting a record label is to make a million dollars within the first year.Other unreasonable goals have to do with the number of records released or the number of artists you will have and manage. So, start with small reasonable goals that fit your needs, because only you know what you can do and how far to push yourself to reach your goals.

Now as for your strategy; I recommend that you brainstorm with other people that are trying or have started their own business because you will find that different points of view will open your thoughts. So, lets face it, two heads are better than one.

Your next step will be to register your company. So, now the big question is should you incorporate or simply file a business certificate with your local county? The big difference between the two is that a corporation is important for keeping your personal and business assets separate. To a major label, incorporating has its advantages, such as, limited liability, better tax options, and flexible partnership arrangements. So, if you want to incorporate, you need to register with the state that you’re operating your business in.

Now if you don’t want or need to incorporate then you can just find your local county clerks office and get your DBA (doing business as) license. This is the option that most people use when they are starting up their company. A DBA enables you to do business under your record label name, As well as open a bank account and that’s very important for anyone trying to make money in any business.

Now that you’ve taken care of setting your goals and strategies and getting your DBA license, you need to come up with your business plan and start hammering away at building your record label.

Have fun!

Copyright your music/songs

Copyrighting your music is one of the most important things you can do because it protects your original work.

I get ask the question “why do I need to copyright my music” all the time. And my answer is “so no one else can claim your works and most importantly so others will know that you are the owner’.

One thing that people don’t know is that you do not have to register your music with the U.S. Copyright Office in order to have the rights to your original work. For instants if you crated an original song and you have the files to support it then you are the owner under the law of copyrights.

Now the reason that you want to register your work is because you will have written proof or protection on your work.

And it is just that simple........

Too get your copyright form go to www.copyright.gov and there will be information on how to fill out the form and exactly what you need to do to get written proof that you own your works.
